Ich habe erst seit 2 Wochen eine Mentorin - kann das Programm aber schon loben: Meine Mentorin hat mir in einer schwierigen Situation genau den richtigen Rat gegeben - und es war sehr gut, dass der von neutraler Seite kam. Ich finde es außerdem super, dass sie in der "echten Wirtschaft" arbeitet und mir hoffentlich in Zukunft etwas Einblick in ihren Beruf geben kann - und somit mir Vorstellungen für meine Zukunft bieten kann. Ich denke auch, dass es sehr gut ist, sich unter Frauen zu vernetzten.

I did not meet my mentor until two weeks ago – but I can already pay the mentoring programme a compliment: My mentor gave me just the right advice in a difficult situation – and it was particularly important that such advice came from a neutral party. I also appreciate that my mentor is an employee in the “real business world”, so hopefully I can gain some insights that will help me plan my professional future. I also think that women’s networking is an important thing.

Zur Zeit arbeite ich an meiner Promotion in Biologie und stelle dabei immer wieder fest, dass Arbeiten in der Wissenschaft zwar viele Vorteile, aber mindestens ebenso viele Nachteile bietet. Sehr angenehm ist die freie Zeiteinteilung und das kreative und eigeninitiative Arbeiten, allerdings möchte ich in nicht zu ferner Zukunft auch eine Familie gründen und wünsche mir einen Beruf mit etwas mehr Zukunftssicherheit. Obwohl wir Kontakte zu anderen Wissenschaftlern pflegen, würde ich doch gerne mehr mit Menschen umgehen, und kann mir z.B. auch vorstellen in der Wissensvermittlung zu arbeiten. Als mögliche Perspektiven (nicht immer gute, leider) sehe ich Anstellungen in der Öffentlichkeitsarbeit, der (Umwelt-)Bildung und dem Management, wobei die Verbindung zur Biologie zwar wünschenswert, aber nicht unbedingt notwendig wäre. Das vorwiegende Problem ist in diesem Bereichen Kontaktpersonen zu erreichen, die bei der Arbeitssuche behilflich sein können (Kontakte, mögliche Jobbörsen...) und auch bei Fragen und mit Tipps zu Bewerbungen zur Seite stehen können. Das könnte ich mir sowohl via E-Mail als auch telefonisch vorstellen, wobei ein persönliches Kennenlernen und erstes Gespräch sicherlich hilfreich wären. Auch wäre es gut zu erfahren welche darüber hinausgehenden Möglichkeiten es für promovierte Biologinnen gibt.

I’m doing my PhD in biology right now and can’t help but notice that although science is offering a lot of advantages, it has a lot of disadvantages, too. It is nice that I am able to manage my own time, and I also appreciate that my job requires creativity and personal initiative. However, since I am planning to start my own family in the not too distant future, I’d prefer a job with more secure future prospects. And although we do maintain contacts with other scientists, I’d prefer getting in touch with other people more frequently. I could therefore also imagine working in the area of knowledge transfer. Possible alternatives I can think of – unfortunately not all of them necessarily great ones – are public relations, (environmental) education, or management. A link to biology would be desirable but not mandatory. My problem is that I don’t know anyone already working in one of these areas who could advise me and help me find a job there as well  – e.g. by establishing contacts, advising me of job exchanges I could attend, or simply by answering my questions about how to best apply for such a job. I can imagine communicating with an experienced female scientist by email or phone. Nevertheless, to get to know each other in an initial face-to-face meeting would be great. And I’d appreciate if someone told me a little more about other jobs there might be for biologists with a doctor’s degree like me.

Ich habe Biologie mit Schwerpunkt Zoologie studiert und mache meine Doktorarbeit im Bereich der Evolutionsbiologie. Es ist schwierig für mich, einen Bereich der Wirtschaft zu definieren, in den ich gerne gelangen würde, weil ich gar nicht weiß, welche Wirtschaftszweige mich mit meiner Ausbildung einstellen würden (von der Pharmaindustrie einmal abgesehen, der ich zwar nicht grundsätzlich abgeneigt bin, allerdings reizt mich der Beruf des Pharmareferenten eher weniger). Ich könnte mir aber schon vorstellen, mich soweit zu verändern, dass meine Ausbildung "nur" noch als Hintergrund dient, d.h., nicht mehr aktiv in der Biologie tätig zu sein.

I have finished my studies in biology with main focus on zoology, and I am doing my PhD in evolutionary biology right now. It is hard for me to say which branch of industry I want to work in later on because I don’t know which branch would be interested in hiring me – apart from the pharmaceutical industry which I don’t object to in principle, but I am not really tempted to become a medical representative. However, I could imagine changing my career path in such a way, that my training as a biologist would "only" provide the background for a job that doesn’t necessarily have to be linked to biology.
